What is Memory Foam?           Memory Foam Mattresses and Pillows  

"Memory Foam" is the term commonly used to describe Visco-Elastic polyurethane foam. Visco-elastic foam was developed in the late 70's by NASA to be used in the space program. The foam was designed to provide astronauts relief from the tremendous pressures put on their bodies during take-off and landing.

Memory foam has very unique properties to other polyurethane foams. Visco-elastic foam is made up of billions of cells which "remember" their shape. Memory foam has an almost gelatinous feel to it, similar to a very thick liquid. When you lie down, the foam is displaced, as a liquid would be, flowing around you conforming to your body keeping you in a natural, ergonomical position. When you get out of bed, these cells return to their original shape, thus giving it the name "visco-elastic".

What Is Viscoelastic?

Visco: resistant to change of shape.

Elastic: able to return to its original shape after being forced to change.

Imagine lying on a surface that knows exactly how far to let you "sink in" so that every point on the contour of your body is supported.  The surface then "flows" back to its original, flat shape much like pushing your hand into the surface of a bowl of water.  The water would flow to fill every contour and crease of your hand then return to its original shape once your hand is removed.
